50 YEARS OF STAR TREK ON TV 1966 - 2016
2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the original Star Trek series first being broadcast on TV. This postcard, featuring a special cinderella stamp and faux postmark, marks this science fiction classic's milestone.
The postcard is a play on the popular "Keep Calm" public information poster with a view of stars in space as the background and refers to the "Final Frontier" which the USS Enterprise originally set out to explore.
The cinderella stamp features an International Space Station (ISS) astronaut offering a "Vulcan hand salute" from orbit as a tribute to actor Leonard Nimoy who passed away in 2015. Nimoy played science officer Mr Spock in the Star Trek series. Cape Cod and Nimoy's home state, Massachusetts, are visible through the ISS window.
The Cinderella stamp is mounted on the front of the postcard, maximum card style, and it's been cancelled with a faux postmark for Planet Earth / United Federation of Planets / 1966 - 2016 to complete the anniversary tribute.
The cinderella stamp on the postcard, while professionally printed, perforated and gummed, is not an official postage stamp but has been produced privately to adorn mail items (in addition to valid postage) and create collectable keepsakes like this postcard. There is a long tradition of producing cinderella stamps in the UK and around the world to highlight noteworthy events and they are now a widely accepted specialisation in philately.
The back of the postcard confirms that only 100 postcards have been produced meaning they should prove scarce in future.
